However, a quick tidbit to consider is that some Ontario plant species are illegal to remove under the Endangered Species Act, as they are endangered, threatened, or extirpated. 

 

It’s a common myth that there’s a specific Ontario law that fines people for picking or digging up white trilliums. Although a private member’s bill, the Ontario Trillium Protection Act, was introduced in 2009 and proposed a minimum fine for doing so, it was never passed into law. However, they are a beautiful flower and having them on your property could be a plus. 

 

• Check local rules before cutting down any trees. 

• Mark where the timber structure will go. 

• Decide which trees stay and which need to be removed. 

• Clear out shrubs, bushes, and small plants. 

• Cut down unwanted trees safely (hire a pro for big ones). 

• Remove or grind down stumps. 

• Clear roots, rocks, and leftover debris. 

• Level the ground if needed. 

• Make sure water drains from the build area. 

• Haul away or chip the wood and yard waste.
