A Timber Frame Partner Built for General Contractors

Your Project, Our Craft

Managing high-end custom homes and commercial construction means coordinating complex builds, tight schedules, and high client expectations. When your project includes timber frame elements, you need a specialized partner who understands not just design and engineering—but actual construction.

That's Wolf Lake Timber Works.

We work with general contractors on residential and commercial projects where heavy timber framing plays a key role. From grand entry features on custom homes, to commercial timber structures involving mass timber, we bring the expertise, precision, and buildability focus you need to deliver exceptional results.

We Bridge the Gap Between Design and Construction

Architects and engineers design beautiful things. Builders make them happen. If you've been in this business long enough, you know that those two realities don't always play out smoothly.

We align those worlds.

Not all general contractors have worked extensively with timber frame elements, and that's completely understandable—it's a specialized trade. Questions about sequencing, structural coordination, connection details, and installation logistics are common, and they're important. When does the timber frame go up? How does it interface with steel or conventional framing? What site prep is needed? How does all that coordination happen?

Here's what sets us apart: Our team doesn't just design timber frames—we build them. Every connection detail that goes into our engineering drawings has been vetted by people who've actually assembled these structures in the field. We understand order of operations, we anticipate coordination challenges, and we design for buildability from day one.

When you look at a set of architectural plans showing timber elements, we can help you see beyond the pretty elevations to the actual construction sequence. We know what works in theory versus what works on your jobsite.

Bring Us In Early

The best timber frame projects start with early collaboration. When you bring Wolf Lake Timber Works into the conversation during preconstruction or the planning phase, we can:

  • Review architectural plans for constructability and flag potential issues before they become expensive problems

  • Provide accurate budgeting with no surprises down the line

  • Advise on sequencing and coordination with other trades and building systems

  • Offer value engineering suggestions that maintain design intent while improving buildability or cost

  • Establish realistic timelines that align with your overall construction schedule

  • Coordinate directly with architects and engineers to ensure timber elements integrate seamlessly with the overall design

Early involvement means fewer change orders, better coordination, and a smoother build from foundation to occupancy.

Engineered Timber Frame Kits

For residential projects—custom home entries, covered porches, great room timbers, gable trusses—we typically provide complete timber frame kits that make your life easier and keep the project moving.

Here's What We Handle:

  • Engineering & Stamped Drawings

We coordinate with structural engineers to provide complete stamped engineered drawings for all timber frame elements, ensuring code compliance and proper integration with your building's structural system.

  • Shop Fabrication

Every timber is cut to exact specifications in our controlled shop environment. All joinery, mortises, tenons, and connections are fabricated with precision—no field improvisation, and no weather delays.

  • Sanded and Pre-Stained

Timbers are sanded and stained to specification before they leave our shop. Your clients see beautiful, finished work the moment the timber frame is installed.

  • Labelled Components and Hardware

Every timber is clearly labelled, and all necessary hardware—bolts, plates, brackets, fasteners—is included and organized. No guessing, no missing pieces.

  • Detailed Installation Instructions

Step-by-step instructions guide your crew (or ours) through the installation process, including sequencing, connection details, and any special requirements.

  • Staged Delivery Options

We understand jobsite logistics. Timber elements aren't always installed consecutively—a front entry might go up early while great room timbers wait until the roof is on. We can ship components in stages based on your timeline and available site space, so you're not storing materials longer than necessary.

Installation: Your Crew or Ours

Professional Installation

  • We're based in Peterborough, Ontario, and can provide professional installation services within approximately a 2-hour radius. Our experienced crews know these frames inside and out.

Builder-Installed Kits

  • For projects outside our travel range, or when installation timing doesn't align with multiple timber phases, our detailed kits are designed for installation by your crew. Everything is labelled, hardware is supplied, and instructions are clear. We're available by phone to answer questions during installation.

The flexibility to choose installation method gives you control over scheduling and logistics while ensuring quality results either way.

Commercial Heavy Timber Construction

For larger commercial builds—restaurants, lodges, retail spaces, mixed-use developments—we bring the same design-to-construction expertise at a bigger scale. Commercial timber framing involves greater complexity, larger spans, more intricate connections, and tighter coordination with structural systems.

We specialize in the heavy timber construction component of commercial projects, working alongside your team and other trades to deliver the architectural vision on schedule and on budget.

Quality and Details Matter

In high-end construction, details are what separate good builders from great ones. A poorly resolved connection, a finish inconsistency, or a clunky transition—these are the things clients notice and remember.

We've been around the block. Our team has encountered virtually every challenge timber framing presents: tricky connections, difficult coordination with MEP systems, complex site conditions, tight tolerances. This experience means we can anticipate problems before they happen and engineer solutions that actually work in the field.

Your reputation is built project by project. When clients walk into their finished home and look up at those timber trusses, or when they stand under the entry portico you built, that craftsmanship reflects on you.

We take that seriously. Every timber we engineer, every joint we cut, every frame we deliver represents not just our work—but yours.
