When you think of timber framing, a lot probably comes to mind: gazebos, pergolas, timber accents. But you might not always contemplate what goes behind the build or the art of using the material.

Or, maybe you do, and that’s how you found this blog.

Today, Wolf Lake Timber Works will take you through our timber-building process and the history of how timber has been used to create stunning architecture.

The Art of Wolf Lake Timber Works

Since 2018, Kaine Laursen and Mike Spohn have used their desire for timber framing to create something spectacular. Whether that means making timber structures to enhance your home or business or adding accents to your property, they have used their years of combined experience to create Wolf Lake Timber Works. Through this business, they have helped their clients bring their visions to life.

We take pride in our ability to work seamlessly with clients from the initial concept to the final installation. Ultimately, it is our years of expertise and open communication that set us apart from the competition.

However, to understand the true mastery of what we do, we’ll take you through the process Wolf Lake Timber Works uses.

Collaboration & Design: Our Expertise Meets Your Vision

Our process is all about combining our expertise and years of experience with a vision that meets your dreams and needs. You can come to us with nearly anything: architectural plans, a Pinterest board, drawings, or even sample images you've found online. While we have prefabricated structures and accents, we can tailor our work to meet your expectations. Ideas are where everything starts.

Conversation is absolutely essential when it comes to establishing what you really want. Don't worry, we'll ask you all of the right questions:

  • What’s the purpose of your project?

  • What inspiration did you find?

  • What’s your budget?

  • Are you looking for a more rustic or modern design?

  • Is this a new complete build, or are you looking for accents/additions?

  • Etc.

Budgeting & Transparent Pricing: No Hidden Fees

When we finalize the concept for your project, you'll receive a highly detailed estimate of what everything will cost. No hidden fees, no pressure to pay more, and no "tricks" to get you to spend more than what fits your budget. Of course, if you decide you want extras or to change your project before prefabrication starts, we can adjust things to fit your new vision. Just keep us in the loop!

Precision Engineering Meets Next-Level 3D Modelling

3D modelling is where we can combine our expertise with your vision. This is where everything truly takes shape. We make sure everything is exactly how you envision it. This design can be tweaked and refined to ensure we accommodate everything you know you want, and even some things you didn't know you needed. Not until you're happy. Once the 3D model is approved, we create a complete set of stamped, engineered shop drawings that comply with all local building codes and engineering requirements, including snow load requirements for your area.

Expert Crafting and Detailed Fit Testing: Quality Guaranteed

The expertly engineered drawings act as the guiding force for the timber craftsmen who make up the backbone of Wolf Lake Timber Works. They work with the highest-quality, raw #1 Douglas Fir timber, carefully crafting every aspect of your structure in our workshop. These pieces are carefully tested and fitted to ensure the highest level of strength and aesthetic appeal. We prefabricate our pieces to ensure the product is maintained in a controlled environment and is easy to install. From there, everything is cut, sanded, stained, and fit-tested.

Our team uses traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery because of its longstanding effectiveness in creating structures with unmatched strength and longevity. We fit-test every joint by hand to ensure it's in top shape.

Prefabrication for Perfection: Why Our Products are Made In-House

As we mentioned, all our products are designed, crafted, and finalized in-house. This means every structure or accent is created in a temperature-controlled environment where everything is overseen hundreds of times by some of the best professionals in the industry. While some may worry that prefabricated structures may lack integrity or be uncustomizable, this couldn’t be further from the truth. All of our products are top-notch in both strength and style, and any of our designs can be adjusted to meet your needs.

A Brief History of Timber Framing & the Art of Architecture

Timber framing has been a beloved form of construction for thousands of years, valued for its durability and resilience. Not only this, but the material was abundant and provably sustainable, making it an ideal choice for builders of the time.

From Viking longhouses employing early timber construction techniques such as notches and intersecting beams, to European settlements across England and Scotland that used timber as a primary building material, the use of timber for construction has been around for centuries, for good reason.

Timber is such a versatile and long-lasting material that it's like combining engineering and art.

Unlike other forms of construction, timber framing embraces exposed beams, pegged joints, and expertly cut mortise-and-tenon joinery because it adds a rustic element to a building. You can view the structure's integrity and art simultaneously. The final result feels honest, warm, and timeless.

When it comes to artistic timber framing, structural design and fine woodworking are at the heart of it all. Not only do you need to have a keen knowledge of timber (we use raw #1 Douglas Fir timber), the grain, moisture movement, and load paths – as well as a good sense for matching a client's desired aesthetic. Balancing beauty with strength in and of itself is an art form.

Wolf Lake Timber Works uses time-honoured traditions and traditional applications, ensuring that any structure or accent we create will last. This makes timber stunning, practical, and flexible.

Sustainability as a Craft: Creating Art that Gives Back

Sustainability is one of the major appeals of timber construction; when responsible businesses replenish the supply of timber as they use it, structural wood can store carbon and reduce embodied energy compared to other construction materials.

Carefully crafted timber structures and accents can outlast several generations. Timber providers who truly value sustainability and the future aren't just thinking about their current project; they're thinking about projects for years to come and ensuring there's a good place to create their art.

Timber is strong, flexible, easy to process and finish, and doesn't often result in unnecessary waste, further promoting its sustainability. It can be modified as needed and integrates easily with modern materials and more modern builds.

What’s more? Some research has shown that timber can even improve health. Four studies have shown that timber can lower sympathetic nervous responses, thereby reducing anxiety and stress. Now that’s an investment.

The Art of Safety: Nothing is Worth More than Peace of Mind

Contrary to popular belief, timber is more fire-resistant than you'd think.

During severe fires, exposed timber tends to char on the outside, forming an insulating layer that protects the interior wood from further damage. When you choose quality, pre-treated timber, you don't need to stress about fire safety. This resilient material can also withstand strong Ontario winds, harsh seasons, and even earthquakes if put to the test.
